West Hills Stair

Services: Design and General Contractor

The goal of this project was simple:  Design and build a stair to connect the back deck to the back yard below; and do it in a way that is durable, beautiful and looks like was original.  The lower section of the stair is concrete, which is also an extension of the retaining wall.  The upper section is a quarter of a circle, helical steel stair, with a graceful, curve that seamlessly meets the deck above.  The treads are custom cut, bluestone, a type of sandstone.  By designing this stair in this way, we were able blend the stair with the landscaping and  eliminate the unusable area usually found beneath stairs, which is also a difficult area to maintain.   Instead, this design compliments the landscaping and the house and is incredibly durable.  The bluestone treads were installed without fasteners and are held in place by two pins and gravity and cushioned by a thin sheet of ribbed rubber that allows for drainage.  This stair is essentially designed like a ship since it's is entirely exposed to the weather.  It is designed to get wet and dry out year after year, season after season. You can check out this blog to learn more about the project.  The blog has a lot of  step by step detail of how it is was built.
