North Portland ADU
How do you take a medium size garage (20' wide x 22' deep) and transform it into a spacious, 580 sf swanky living unit lives large? We think we've done it, and all within the existing shell. Part of it was luck, to be perfectly honest. The roof slope was just right to allow us to barely squeak in a legal sleeping loft with a legal stair and all. We designed the space so that it's as open as possible and has a large 2 story space along the south third of the space. It's open to the tall ceilings, and we've designed some attractive, tall windows on the south wall, which help fill the space with light.
Next, the kitchen has been designed to feel pretty large, as it takes full advantage of every inch of space and wraps the corner, helping to conceal the full size bathroom, with stacked laundry in the northwest corner of the unit. The unit even considers where a modest dining space would be The living room area is a centrally located, compact space, under the bulk of the loft, and will have a special, entertainment center, that is hinged on one side and is built like a door, with casters (wheels) so that it can be opened up to reveal storage space behind and to access the water heater. There will be hidden drawers in every nook and cranny to maximize the storage opportunities. To finish it off, the north wall of the living room will be an accent wall, finished off with reclaimed wood planks, that will wrap around each stair riser to add a sense of artistic craftsmanship to the space. We'll finish it off with steel and cable railing, and buttery smooth walls.
Things are coming along nicely at the ADU project. The railings are almost completed, the shelves under the stair are done. The tile is almost completed as well. It's all looking so great and I look forward to posting completed pictures soon!
